Jean Valjean is the main character in the novel Les Misérables by Victor Hugo, published in 1862. He is a former convict who, after serving 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving family, is released on parole. However, he continues to struggle under the weight of his criminal past and is treated with suspicion and contempt by society.
